The Prince’s Toys - Koshkin plays Koshkin (Nikita Koshkin, guitar)

princes_toys.gif (83670 bytes)This CD is produced by Frank Koonce, professor of guitar at Arizona State University, and board member of the Guitar Foundation of America. Apparently, this is the first professional recording that Koshkin has done. I have to say "thank goodness" that someone made an effort to record this genius. Not only are these compositions masterworks, the guitar playing is nothing less than extraordinary.

The recording consists entirely of compositions that Koshkin has written. The first piece is dedicated to Andres Segovia. His composition "Piece with Clocks" utilizes a "prepared" guitar, which he admits was strongly influenced by the American composer, John Cage. It is truly amazing the sounds that Koshkin produces from the guitar, especially with this piece. This piece, however, is not a mere display of virtuosity and special effects, but rather a well-developed modern composition. He plays the better known Usher Waltz with great skill and depth.

Koshkin’s playing should be used as an example to all music students and professionals alike of how passion, control, technical facility, and purity combine to create incredible interpretations. His interpretations push the guitar’s possibilities to the limit and he takes no prisoners along the way. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
