What a treat it is for us to have a nationally recognized jazz clinician, Howard Morgen, as one of our members. Howard called me more than a year ago and introduced himself. I said, "THAT Howard Morgen?!" He mentioned that he and his wife had just bought a house in Chapel Hill, that they'd be moving down, and asked me to tell him about our guitar scene, etc. We've since gotten together many times and had great chats over dinner and chess. So, it gives me great pleasure to recommend to you my friend Howard Morgen's introductory class (we hope there will be more) on fretboard harmony and better visualizing those harmonic shapes. This class is a steal at ten bucks, so call me at 490-1920 to reserve a spot. Bring your guitar, as this is a hands-on clinic, and don't be shy! You will not be asked to play anything solo.

Thanks again to Doug Somervell for his fine article, “Keeping it Shiny.” I had to go to four hardware stores to find the Old English Red Oil; but boy, was it worth it! When I took out the article and followed the directions carefully to clean my "Rosey" ('95 Rozas) for the very first time, I got as much of a boost in sound as I had when I switched out my bone saddles for ivory. I recommend one change to the article: put the red oil on a dry cloth, NOT a wet one¾the damp cloth waters down the red oil and makes it less effective.

I want to thank all those who came to our first salon concert of the year. You made it the complete success that it was. Forty-five folks showed up at Wade Marlette’s lovely home and enjoyed quite a fine evening, with 90 minutes of beautiful playing by Miguel Charosky and flutist Alma Coefman. If you want to hear more of Alma's flute playing, please come to my recital Nov. 16th (see the TGS Calandar).

When I first heard Gerald Klickstein, he was playing one of the harder pieces in the repertoire, Ponce's Gigue from the Suite in A minor. We are very fortunate to have Professor Klickstein to play for us, and this recital is going to be one that you will not want to miss (see the lead newsletter article).

Lastly, the board has asked me to request ALL of you to please send in your $17 for the Falla Guitar Trio tickets (Sat., Feb. 22, 8:00 p.m. at Durham's Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Fayetteville St.). Please send your check, payable to TGS, for however many tickets you want. The tickets will be mailed to you post haste.

Ok, nuff said. I've got a concert to practice for….

Sincerely,

Randy Reed
