ECU SUMMER GUITAR WORKSHOP

The East Carolina University Summer Guitar Workshop is aimed at students who are interested in improving and acquiring skills in classical guitar performance. The workshop is open to high school students, college students and adults. Although prior experience on classical guitar is desirable, a seminar for beginning students will be held as part of the workshop. Other components of the workshop will include ensemble playing, daily technique classes, and daily masterclasses for intermediate and advanced players. The only prerequisite for the workshop is a letter of recommendation from a music teacher or a short audition tape. There will also be a solo competition for advanced workshop participants.

ELLIOT FRANK, Director: Elliot Frank holds the Doctor of Music degree in guitar performance from Florida State University. He is currently assistant professor of guitar at East Carolina University where he initiated and developed the guitar studies program. He has performed solo recitals in Caracas, Venezuela, New York, Dallas, Cleveland, Memphis, New Orleans, Washington DC, and other major metropolitan areas throughout North and South America. He has appeared as featured soloist with the North Carolina Symphony and has earned top prizes in two international competitions.  An authority on the music of Venezuelan composer Antonio Lauro, Dr. Frank will make the first recording of Lauro's complete Venezuelan waltzes as part of his debut compact disc recording. His students have earned numerous awards, including first place in the Music Teacher's National Association Wurlitzer Young Artist Competition.

ANDREW ZOHN, Guest Recitalist and artist teacher:Andrew Zohn is rapidly making a name for himself as one of America's up-and-coming young guitarists. National winner of the MTNA Collegiate Artists' Competition, he also holds top prizes in four different international competitions including the Guitar Foundation of America and the Stotsenberg Memorial solo guitar competitions. He has performed throughout the United States as recitalist and concerto soloist. He is currently on the faculty of Darton College in Albany, Georgia and at Columbus State University in Columbus, Ga.

DOUGLAS JAMES, Guest Recitalist and artist teacher: Douglas James had performed as a classical guitarist throughout the US, Europe, and Mexico. He has received many prizes and awards, including top prize at the 1992 Arturo Toscanini Solo Guitar Competition and two National Endowment for
the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowships for work in both 19th and 20th century music. He has just returned from playing a series of concerts in Italy as well as performing at Oberlin Conservatory and at the Stetson International Guitar Workshop. Dr. James directs guitar studies at Appalacian State University and is the founding director of Appalachian Guitar Fest.

ECU SUMMER GUITAR WORKSHOP SOLO GUITAR COMPETITION
THE ECU Summer Guitar Workshop will hold its first solo guitar competition for workshop participants during the week of June 27-July 2. There will be two rounds, a semifinal and final round. The finals will be public. Participants should select and prepare a twenty minute solo program of works from the standard repertoire. This program will be performed in its entirety should the contestant be selected for the finals. The panel of judges will select pieces from this program to be heard during the semifinal round. Contestants will be stopped if their program lasts longer than twenty minutes. First prize will be a minimum award of 750 dollars.  On campus room and board will be available. Students over the age of 18 may also stay off campus if they prefer. Tuition cost for the workshop is $250.00. Information on campus room and board will be sent to all who express interest. Dormitory room rates are as follows:
Double rates:   $11.50
Single rates: air conditioned  $23.00
Meal rates: Breakfast $3.13, lunch $5.25, dinner $5.83 daily total $14.21
